Having proposal photos is very important to many people. Just like wedding photos, looking back on your proposal can bring loads of emotion and memories. Photos from your proposal are also great for showing loved ones. Everyone knows the first question people ask when you get engaged is how did they propose, so this way you’ll be able to show them.
Trying to get photos of your proposal isn’t so straightforward. There are some not so great options, such as setting your phone or camera up on a timer and hoping it gets the photo. You can also record a video and take screen grabs but those are low resolution. Trying to do either of these can also be hard to set up without your partner noticing.
Getting a photographer to take photos makes it so much easier for you, and produces a much higher quality image. There are a couple different ways for a photographer to capture this special moment for you:
The most common form of proposal photos are “paparazzi” style photos, or secret photographers. This is exactly what it sounds like, a photographer that your partner doesn’t notice. The photographer can blend in as a tourist, passersby, even hide if needed. Blending in with the crowded works best in high traffic areas with lots of people and places a camera would make sense. Examples of areas include, cities, parks, touristy areas, and more. A photographer may need to hide if it is uncommon or too noticeable of an area. That may include more private areas such as courtyards, gardens, secluded areas, and more.
To set up secret proposal photos you first need to find a photographer, preferably one with experience with this style of proposal. Once you find your photographer you will need to pick a time and location, your photographer will be able to help you with this for the best backdrop and lighting. After the location is picked, planning out the smaller details will help you and your photographer get a good plan in place so you are on the same page.

A less common way for a photographer to capture proposal photos is with a couples photo session. This takes away some of the sneakiness, but may also give some hints if this is uncommon for you and your partner.
The way it works is you book a photo session with a photographer and let them know that you want to propose during the session. You can give the photographer a cue so they know when it will happen, or have the photographer set up a pose for you where you get on one knee. One of the benefits of this style of proposal photos is that you and your partner will be dressed up and ready for photos. Your partner will also be able to help give input on a location they like.
Proposals are some of my favorite sessions to shoot. I have done them in many different locations and have had a blast with all of them. If you have any questions or are looking for a photographer please reach out!
